What is Feng Shui?

The words Feng and Shui mean wind and water respectively.  They are used together to relate to the essential energy around us.  These two words were chosen because it has long been understood in the Far East that where there is strong wind, the positive energy will be blown away but where there is fresh, moving water, the energy will linger.  From this understanding came one of the founding principles of energy in the environment.

Feng Shui is a skill that has been practiced for over 4000 years in the Far East to create prosperity, harmony and balance, in homes as well as places of work.

One common assumption about Feng Shui is that it relates mainly to the interior of a building.  However it is the energy outside a building and the type and quality of energy reaching the door that defines the interior energy.

Feng Shui is based on the theory of yin and yangYang energy is the male, active energy of the outside, while yin energy is the quieter energy inside a building.  Both aspects of energy are required before supportive energy can be produced.

The Five Elements - wood, fire, earth, metal and water, the four seasons and the energies relating to these are also vital factors in Feng Shui.

It is important to remember that superficial use of Western Feng Shui "cures" such as wind chimes and crystals can do more harm than good if used to expand unsupportive energy.  While energy can be enhanced, it can also be damaged.

Real Feng Shui would not have survived for so long if it were as simple as many of the books make it appear. Energy needs to be carefully understood before it can be changed.
